Elmer here to weave some final tales about the restoration of Old Faithful the Vintage Yellowstone Travel trailer!
Let's start with the ugly....there is no ugly. When you find a travel trailer of this age that is still so structurally solid and the only thing it would need is a bit of tender loving care and good ole elbow grease....there is no ugly!
Now that we have that straight there is some bad and lots of good. If you have been reading the blog entries then you must be familiar with all the good. The DWP's say that they have never seen a travel trailer so structurally solid. Old Faithful is on the market for a new family to pick up where they left off but they continue to make improvements until that happens. Let's start with the original floor tiles. They do have wear especially at the sink area. The DWP's pondered a bit on whether or not to replace the floor, but one thing they have found is people are very particular. Some want linoleum and others hate it. Some like the faux hardwoods, others say no way. Some want vintage looking tiles placed, but then you have to choose a color. And since Old Faithful is aluminum on the outside and birch on the inside, he can be any color scheme the new owners want. The DWP's put down some throw rugs that match the curtains. Both are included with the sale, but they can easily be changed depending on the new owners tastes. The flooring area in the front dinette is still in very nice condition. And the back area is not too bad. The good news, the actual floor is not squishy. It is solid! The bathroom floor was ripped up in order to replace the old plumbing. Vintage looking grey tiles were put on the floor to go along with the original look and new aluminum strips were put down at the edges.
The wheel wells are in fantastic condition and the plumbing has been repaired, replaced and is in fine working condition. The faucets, sink, shower fixtures, etc. are original to the travel trailer. All have been shined up and looking good! Old faithful has it's original hot water heater and these old things are amazingly efficient! Made in Germany it is a nice piece of machinery. Parts are still available but it has been removed and gone through and is to be tested in the next few days to ensure it is in working condition. The furnace was cleaned up and a new pipe was put in to replace the old rusty one. The Dixie stove is original to the trailer and it too not only displays nicely but works as it should. The bottom broiler drawer will need a new rack and the DWP's are still looking for one. The knobs are all there but they all say front so you may want to get covers that correctly indicate which is which....but no need to sweat the small stuff, right?
All lights are original. They have been removed and cleaned and restored. The gold lights at the dinette and back bedroom were missing their inserts. The DWP's used and old 50's fiberglass lamp shade and cut out new inserts for the lights. They look pretty cool!
The vintage table in the dinette area is included in the sale. It is old and of the era. If you plan to keep it in the trailer you might want to give it a good polishing. It does show it's age but it fits in quite nicely with the look. When you are actually camping you can leave the table inside or take it outside and you will have lots of extra space here. It does push to the side and allows for a cot to be folded out for extra sleeping space. The cot is included in the sale along with the mattress. The blue striped blanket is not, just used as a prop to show you potentially what it could look like. When not in use you can store it along the side wall under the window in front. The birch was replaced under the curb side window at the dinette. The birch was also replaced at the front window up to the top of the window. This was due to water damage from before and the old birch could not be repaired. The area under the street side window did have water damage but it was able to be sanded and coated with shellac and was not replaced as it still looks nice. New floor trim was cut and fitted throughout.
Speaking of storage, there is lots of it! There is a shelf in the front above the window. The props in the pic are not included in the sale, just there to give you an idea of how homey this trailer can be once you give it your own personal style. There are two overhead cupboards at the front. Along the street side are more overhead cupboards. The original door hardware is complete throughout the trailer and shined up nicely! At the sink are cupboards below as well as a pull put cutting board. The formica or marlite counter top is in okay condition as well as is the backsplash. The original glass towel holder is right in place!
Beyond the kitchen is a closet with a mirror attached. The mirror was removed and the back date was March 1959. This closet is huge and has a clothing hanger bar with a shelf over that. The electric box is in this closet and it has been tightened up and rewired as the wires were loose and hanging. The old cast plumbing and copper plumbing that goes to the bathroom are in this closet and this has all been replaced. PVC for the drains and 3/8ths inch copper tubing replaced the original copper tubing.
The bathroom shower floor has been recoated. The aluminum trim was removed and polished. The formica walls are in great condition. The original shower fixtures were removed, cleaned and replaced. A sink, similar to the one found in it was put in. First it was coated with two part epoxy and fitted with a wooden form underneath to add strength. Also in the bathroom you will find the original soap dish, towel holder, and toilet paper roll holder. There is a shelf above where the toilet would be and it has been cleaned and recoated with shellac. The divider wall was removed and replaced with new 1/4 inch birch. The rear wall all the way up to the ceiling was replaced as was the wall area under the bathroom window. It will need a toilet but it is all ready to have one installed.
The bedroom rear wall was replaced with new birch from the floor up to the overhead shelf. It was fitted with new trim strips. There is additional storage overhead! You can really pack up your goods in this travel trailer. The water tank under the bed was replumbed and cleaned and refitted. There is additional storage underneath the bed that can be accessed through the escape hatch door. The screens on the doors are original and were removed and cleaned and replaced. The doors were sanded and recoated with shellac and put back up. The rear door exterior handle is broken but can still be opened and closed. It will need to be replaced if you so choose. This something the DWP's may still do and it will be noted if done so. In front of the bed area is another closet area, one with shelves and another with a clothes bar and a shelf above. The wheel well is located in this tall closet and in great condition.
The space where the refrigerator goes has a storage area underneath. This was rebuilt with new birch and frame for the shelf to hold up the fridge. The original cabinet door was sanded and coated and put back in place with the original hardware. The DWP's put in a Dometic fridge and the door face was made to match the interior. This could be a temporary fridge as a new owner may want to replace it with one of their choosing so it was not framed in. A microwave or toaster or other appliances could be put in the space above the fridge. A matching curtain was hung to give it aesthetic appeal in the meantime. There is another cupboard above that.
The furnace is original to the trailer. It is a panelray vertical radiant heater. The flue was replaced with shiny new.
The ceiling panel above the furnace was replaced due to water damage. As can be seen in the photos on this blog there is some areas on the ceiling where the birch is delaminating but nothing that would be considered an eyesore to most. The entire ceiling was spray coated with shellac.
New York weather this time of year makes getting work on the exterior difficult unless you are related to the abominable snowman. The exterior trim on both sides of the trailer front to back was removed, straightened cleaned and resealed with new butyl rubber tape. All broken window glass was replaced. The windows were removed and resealed with butyl rubber tape and put back in place. New rubber seals were put in the drip edges of the windows. The only one yet to be done is the bathroom. and this will be taken care of before the sale. Most of the exterior screws have been removed, polished at the area where they will fit back in, at the holes and replaced with new. This will be completed by the time the new owners pick up the trailer. The area at the screw holes was polished to make it easier for shining this baby up and hopefully make it so that will not have to be removed when that time comes.

The rear lights were rewired and done in a way so that if they ever need to be fished it will be possible. Fishes were left in place and marked. All joints were soldered and sealed with rubber splicing tape, no wire nuts. All hardware used was stainless with the exception of the exterior screws which are zinc plated carbon steel. The vents protruding through the roof have been removed, cleaned up, resealed, straightened and reinstalled. They do not leak and I'd say they never will.
Old Faithful the old Yellowstone has been pretty well gone through and lots has been done that has been mentioned elsewhere in the blog. The DWP's have taken the time to restore this trailer in a way that keeps it original and also provides the best quality they could. They have done their best to make this baby last another 50 or more years!
Thank you to everyone who gave advice and encouragement along the way!!! In the beginning, it almost didn't seem possible that this day would come, but alas, it has. Old Faithful is awaiting a day when once again he gets to enjoy the adventures and travels that he did many years ago! Yep, keeping the faith really paid off!
Elmer the frog here ready to weave you a few more tales!Been a long time now since I have updated this here blog but that has something to do with this here New York weather. It's been pretty darn cold! Last time I did blog the DWP's were busy trying to get the kitchen looking halfway decent and then ripped apart Old Faithful's rear end. Well, when they did that they found lots of not so nice little surprises with the plumbing. The copper plumbing had splits and blisters all along its length. The holding tank had broken fittings and didn't appear to be properly installed. The drain lines were black pipe and cast iron and filled to the top with rust. The porcelain toilet was broken as was the sink. The metal shower floor was covered in surface rust and the drain fitting was broken. Well, if you are into repairing old travel trailers, this is not a job you want to get into when it is so cold the abominable snowman won't venture outside!

Just to refresh your memories, here are a few pictures of what the DWP's started with...

At the inside of each rear light, the old boards, were quite rotted and warped so they were replaced and the wiring was removed and redone in a way that made more sense. In other words, if there are ever any problems in the future, they will be easier for the new owner to fish and figure out! Here are a few pictures to show you the old and the new "working" wiring! The frame or brace below these boards was also replaced as one side did have rot.

There are still lots of things to do to make this part of the travel trailer complete but it sure does feel like home now. Old Faithful is really impressed!! And today, here in upstate New York, it was actually 35 degrees with rain. The snow started to wash away and we spent almost three hours this evening just talking about all the trips we are going to take together in the future. Funny thing, I see a big change in Old Faithful. He is not his usual pessimistic self. I think the enthusiasm of the dwp's is rubbing off on him. For a while there they were pretty cranky with the cold weather and all and not being able to get things done. And to top it off they said they have another trailer coming soon that they keep saying they need to make room for. But today...today was a good day! They were so excited, they even thought about spending the night in Old Faithful! Hah! That was all it took to change the mood to one of complete merriment for the ole geezer! You see, I think he actually believes in the future! And right before we shut the lights down he whispered...like your friend Billy Joel says, tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems, yeah, yeah, yeah...I'm keeping the faith!
Good day my faithful friends. Elmer the frog here to let you know that progress is still being made on my good ole friend Old Faithful! Yeah, me and Old Faithful were getting a bit fearful that we had been forgotten because of this thing the DWP's call the holiday season but sure enough the dwp's came back and did some more work. The kitchen and the dinette area are almost done. Ya'all remember what Old Faithful looked like when the man and the lady came to pick us up right? Like this...

Well, as you know there was water damage on the dinette walls in the usual place due to Old Faithful having a bad case of leakatosis. The man dwp sealed up all those windows and the outside trim and made this place I like to call home totally leak proof. We had some rain here a while back in good old upstate NY and Old Faithful passed the leak test with flying colors! The man also put some drip edge seal strips in the window panes of the jalousie glass to keep out the moisture and the draft. So that meant the walls could be repaired and replaced. The curb side window was pretty bad below the window but both the man and the lady DWP were real pleased to see that this was only surface damage to the birch and that Old Faithful's bones (frame) were in really good shape with no rot. They say they made these Yellowstones really well and this was one more time Old Faithful was a good example of that. Here are a few pictures of what his bones looked like underneath the birch.

The street side panel under the window was not bad enough to warrant replacement according to the dwp's and so it was sanded and cleaned and sealed and shellaced. The center board of the front between the windows was replaced and then covered with birch and the sides of each window received new birch as well. The rest of the front area was sanded and shellaced over and over to get a good match in color. The man also fixed the electric. New floor trim was put down and while the floor has yet to be cleaned and polished it is in pretty good condition overall. The man and the lady dwp debated whether or not to put in a table and a cot or to build new bunks. The front area of the dinette is 84 inches if I remember correctly and they thought a cute old table would be the ticket. So they put one in and grabbed a cot and decided to to go that route. Curtains were made to match the table and chair colors. Here are some more pictures of the dinette and the kitchen.
That is one of the reasons they liked the idea of a table and a cot. The table still has more room to slide over and folding chairs can be added and easily stored in the huge closet near the back. It takes about three minutes to move the table over to the side and set up the cot. And there is still room to walk if you have to get up to use the bathroom!
Old Faithful has two closets on opposite sides and one door has an extra panel that folds out. This creates a room divider for privacy. Like everything else these were sanded and shellaced and put back up again. It is a pretty neat option and gives you an idea of how spacious this trailer is.
And he is feeling pretty proud of himself. He is starting to believe there is a reason for someone to still love him after all. Why just the other day he said he can't wait for a couple of kids to sit down at that table and play a good old fashioned game of go fish. When I pointed out how much I liked his new optimistic attitude, he told me he also couldn't wait for someone to play a game of go frog as in...hey frog, go away! But that's okay because his good mood didn't last long. The man and the lady dwp moved on to the rear of Old Faithful and they did this...
He says his plumbing is like the veins his blood runs through and the dwp's are yanking it all out! I keep telling him to have faith, they will put it back. Only better and stronger and he will be like the million dollar man trailer. He just listens and sighs..........deeply.
Well, your friend Elmer better get back inside of Old Faithful and away from this computer for now. I think he really needs me now. Elmer back here to weave you some more tales about the rebirthing of my friend Old Faithful the 1959 Yellowstone travel trailer.
One thing about these old travel trailers is that 9.999999 times out of 10, they leak. They leak at the seams and they leak at the windows. The dwp's call this leakatosis and yes, Old Faithful was afflicted with it. Before you get into rebuilding one you have to make sure you fix the leaks. Otherwise, all your work on the inside will be for nothing.
So the man dwp went to work curing the leakatosis. Old Faithful was just a coming apart at the seams, tee hee. The man dwp removed the drip rails and molding along the exterior edges. It was easy to get the drip rail off but the old putty used as the sealer hardened over time and that was a bear to get off. The rails were also a little bent out of shape and they had to be straightened and put back into proper form after they were cleaned up.
The dwp surgeons have cured the leakatosis!!
Old Faithful is so pleased with all that the man has done on the outside. She just keeps on taking away things that have been a part of Old Faithful for over 50 years now. Old Faithful is getting kind of worried but I keep telling him what doesn't kill him will make him stronger. I just hope the lady starts getting him back together soon cause I don't know how long he can hold out!!
He's feeling a lot more optimistic about his future for a pessimist. Hopefully, the next time I write, you will get to see some more progress on the inside! Until then, like my buddy Billy Joel says, tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems, yeah yeah yeah I'm keeping the faith! Agent99http://www.blogger.com/profile/06018654500985817819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887244841098405347.post-48125521077859253662010-11-27T15:46:00.000-08:002010-11-27T15:46:37.778-08:00You light up my life! How ya'all are? Elmer the frog here about to weave you some tales about lighting. Old Faithful has been sitting around for a long time. What's that got to do with lighting you ask? Well, keep yer britches on cause I am about to tell you. When you sit around doing nothing in New York weather, things start to happen. And I don't mean good things. I am talking deterioration! Old Faithful's lights were put in sometime around 1959, at least that is what the dwp's say. And they are still there which made the man and the lady very happy! However, like I said before these two like finding things that are original but don't always like the way they look. In Old Faithful's case his lights still shine but not as brightly and not as pretty as they did back in the old days. So, once again out came the tools and at the lady dwp's orders the man dwp started removing the light fixtures. The lady says one thing she doesn't mess with is electricity. After the fridge incident I'll bet she doesn't mess with those anymore either but I want to stick to the topic at hand. They took those lights away and once again Old Faithful went into his paranoia state talking about meeting up with the junkyard crusher.
They just took them out to make them better I said.
I can see myself on the crusher conveyor now he said.
No fridge and now no lights he said.
I am useless he said.
But look at your kitchen I said.
What good is a kitchen with no fridge for food and no lights to cook by he said.
It's over, he said. I knew it all along, he said.
You'll see, I said, You gotta have faith.
Now I will admit, I get a little nervous myself when the dwp's start taking out the essentials but I believe in them. And yes those lights were a bit of an eyesore. Rusty and dull and dusty. Luckily this has been just one more opportunity for me to say..."I told you so" to Old Faithful. The gas lamp on the overhead storage compartment above the dinette was fully intact globe and all. Here is a before and after!
The dwp's have not yet done the bathroom or the the back bedroom light but I am sure they will turn out just as nice. One more opportunity for me, Elmer Weaver, therapist to Old Faithful, to build self esteem in my old friend (and to say "I told you so" of course!)
Speechless he was for a change! I keep telling him, have faith. Your time is not over and there are better days to come. And when the dwp's are through with you, there is going to be some very lucky somebody out there who will want to come and get you and spend all their time in you! Besides, I say, your better than a lily pad to me in the condition you are in. So once you are beautiful again why wouldn't somebody just fall in love with you! Old Faithful, I said, you are one ornery son of a trailer. I promise you, you will get a fridge, but until then, like my buddy Billy Joel says, tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems, yeah yeah yeah I'm keeping the faith!Agent99http://www.blogger.com/profile/06018654500985817819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4887244841098405347.post-78027661538605617562010-11-27T12:10:00.000-08:002010-11-27T12:15:34.294-08:00There is a reason for that escape door!Howdy ya'all! Elmer the frog back to weaving tales here! We had a lil bit of excitement inside Old Faithful and it had everything to do with the old refrigerator! Old Faithful was still storing food inside of it when the dwp's got him. Yep, old moldy cheese and the likes. Well, the lady dwp didn't like that idea and so she decided to pull it out of it's spot and take it outside to hose it down and give a good going over. So, all by her lonesome she pulled it out of the hole and got it only so far until she had to hollar for the man dwp to come and help her. When the man dwp got inside of Old Faithful he told her to get out and get out quick...there was an ammonia leak. It's funny now so I can laugh. You know how Old Faithful has what they call an escape door? Well, Old Faithful said he never saw anyone actually use it to escape...until the lady dwp came along. Leaping lizards you should have seen her jump over the bed area and out that back escape door in a matter of seconds! The man dwp put on a mask. Boy did he look funny! He bravely ventured back in and with all of his courage and strength he pulled that old fridge out and through Old Faithful's door and into the driveway! While all this was going on the lady dwp was in a panic....you're going to be okay right?, she kept asking over and over again. Neither one of them worried about me or Old Faithful! Alas, all is well. Except of course for Old Faithful. That fridge was one his luxury features and we aren't quite sure it is going to go back in the door it went out. Old Faithful feels kinda empty inside like they removed one of his lungs or something. I keep reassuring him that they will provide a transplant, but you know Old Faithful...forever the pessimist! I told him he should feel good like he just had liposuction and lost a quick 100lbs. Old Faithful said something about frogs legs being a delicacy and at that point I decided sit quietly and wait for some more action from the dwps. I surely do hope they don't get hungry!

Hi again folks. Elmer the frog here hopping in to weave you some more tales about my good friend Old Faithful. Let me give you some history first. Back in 1945 a guy by the name of Elmer Weaver (go figure) started the Yellowstone Coach Company building and selling Yellowstone Travel Trailers in Wakarusa, Indiana. They say that back then Yellowstones were the trailer of choice for carnival employees. The largest trailer built by this company was 27ft and they never went any bigger. Old Faithful hails from Wakarusa and a good thing too cause these travel travels are known for being well built. They are also known for having all the amenities for a very comfortable style of living while on the road. All Yellowstones built in 1960 and before were never painted and sported the beautiful silver aluminum look. Just like Old Faithful! The original company no longer builds these trailers. The Gulfstream company builds a line of luxury trailers today that they call Yellowstones! If you follow this blog you will see what I mean when I tell you these babies are well built!
While I am at it I might as well give you the history of the man and the lady. They like to think of themselves as old trailer surgeons, at least that is what the camper me and Old Faithful sit next to told us. He said that he and the other trailers being restored call them the Driveway People cause the only time we see them is when they are in the driveway working on us. So, from this point on I will refer to them as the man DWP and the Lady DWP...DWP being short for DriveWay People. From what I hear they have an appreciation for "old" things and days gone by. They absolutely love bringing old travel trailers out of old fields and barns and making them look like they did in their heyday so that some day a somebody will once again enjoy them in all their glory.

Last time I told you that the lady dwp was going to do some work on the kitchenette. Well, work she did! Lot's of things got done and I think Old Faithful, the pessimist that he is, is starting to believe that something big is going to happen to his old self!
First, let me tell you about Dixie the stove. She is original and has been with Old Faithful since the beginning around 1959. The lady dwp removed all of her knobs, both upper and lower oven and broiler handles, the grates and the loose nameplate. The splash guard on the right was also removed. The splash guard is aluminum attached to birch with aluminum trim that goes along the edge. It was dull, dirty and full of grease. Old grease! Here is what it looked like:

The splash guard was polished with diamond brite truck box polish. The lady and the man dwp's love it! I heard them talking about how they used to shine aluminum the hard way until they discovered this magical liquid! The back of the splash guard was sanded and shellaced. It looks like a mirror now! I never knew how handsome I am for a frog but I sit in front of it often now. Old Faithful says I am just being vain!
My name is Elmer the Frog and I am about to weave you up a story about my good ole friend Old Faithful. I see some bright things in our future and I'd like you to come on along for the ride!
For some time now Old Faithful and I have been living, if that is what you can call it, in the Adirondacks in New York. Some kid left me in this travel travel when he got tired of me and I have been sitting here ever since. But the story is not about me, it's about Old Faithful the forgotten 1959 Yellowstone travel trailer who lets me live in him. I guess we have both been pretty much forgotten and I gotta tell ya Old Faithful is pretty forlorn about the whole thing. Well, you know what they say about frogs being lucky and I kept telling Old Faithful that things would turn around as long as we stuck together. I am an optimist and my good buddy here is the king of pessimism.
A few days ago these people came and walked inside with flashlights. Next thing we knew Old Faithful's lights were being hooked up and we were cruising down the mountain roads! Here is us before we left, you can't see me cause I am hiding inside!

We went to three gas stations before the people found a place to put air in Old Faithful's tires. I told Old Faithful that air in the tires is the beginning of better things to come and I think he felt better afterward too. Of course the ole geezer would never admit it. Then we were on the road for almost 5 hours. It was windy and rainy and dark and for a while there I wasn't quite sure Old Faithful was up to the task so I told him the story about the little engine that could and told him to just keep repeating "I think I can, I think I can". He told me to go find some lily pad to hang out on and I told him he was my lil lily pad. He did perk up though about the last mile or two. And then we sat in another driveway for the night. Didn't sleep a wink though. We stayed up all night arguing about what was going to happen when the sun came up! Old Faithful, the pessimist that he is, said the sun probably wouldn't come up.
Well, come up it did! Mind you it wasn't all sunshine and happiness though. The people that brought us home walked right on in the next morning. Not sure I am gonna like them too much. They spent all this time putting Old Faithful down! Picking out flaws and blemishes and even when they talked about things giving him character it was in a negative way. Sheesh! All the work I been doing on Old Faithful's self esteem and they crushed it in about 7 minutes flat.

And the bathroom...we don't even want to go there! (No pun intended)

Now mind you, these people did say some nice things. They said Old Faithful hardly had any dents in his aluminum skin and that the floor and underbelly and wheel wells were pretty amazing. They liked Old Faithfuls original "but dirty" light fixtures and the original "but in need of polishing" hardware. "He is solid" they said and "that is what counts" they said.
Last night the handsome gentleman camper we were parked next to told us the lady and man were pretty cool. He also told us a story about a 1963 Shasta Airflyte, named Old Glory, that took off about a week ago to go live with a family in Massachusetts. Said she was the ugliest thing when she got here and turned out so fine when they were through! I think I saw Old Faithful's Aluminum start to twinkle a bit when he said that. Of course, Old Faithful will never admit to it.
So I checked out Old Glory's story on blogspot and hopped right back home to Old Faithful to tell him all about the amazing transformation. (There is a link on this blog if you want to check it out for yourself.)
Old Faithful told me to stop spinning stories.
You'll see I said!
Prove it he said.
That's when I told him I would but he was too BIG to fit in the door to the house where the computer is and then Old Faithful proceeded to give me the silent treatment.
Couldn't take any more put downs I guess.
Now if you have read this far that means you are interested in what happens to us, er, I mean Old Faithful. If you want to hop along on this adventure with me and my friend Old Faithful become a follower! From what I have heard there is a major transformation that is about to happen and I will report all the details to each and every one of you. I will report back to Old Faithful and let him know how many fans he has. He probably won't believe me. Just like he doesn't believe that his future is going to be bright. He thinks he will never go camping again, no one will ever love him enough to hitch him up and take him for a summer ride. He says he will never hear laughter over a card game or smell bacon and eggs in the morning. I keep telling him he just has to have faith! It will happen and when it does he will be the coolest travel trailer in any of the many campgrounds he is going to visit real soon.
What's in it for me you ask? I am just looking forward to the day when I can say "I told you so!" Ahhh..I will be contently croaking that line!

Well, I have to get back inside of my friend Old Faithful. He has been so lonely since the day I met him and we need to stick together you know. I heard the lady talking about working on the kitchenette. I will tell you all about it the next time I hop on in to the computer. Until then, like my buddy Billy Joel says, tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems, yeah yeah yeah I'm keeping the faith!Agent99http://www.blogger.com/profile/06018654500985817819noreply@blogger.com0
